Biography

Paul Heritage was born in London. He studied Furniture and Industrial Design at both Kingston University and the Royal College of Art.

On graduating from the RCA in 1982, he joined Foster Associates in London, as part of a small furniture design team, working on various projects including office storage systems for Hille and desking and bank teller stations for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. The office desking and table system designed at this time for the Renault building was later developed by Tecno to become the Nomos range of office furniture.

In 1984 Paul set up a studio in London called Heritage Design and also became a Director of the design consultancy Ambit Studio. During the next few years collaborating with Ambit, many systems were designed for Concord Lighting, Tecnolyte/Targetti and Thorn Lighting - Concord’s Control Spot won several awards including the prestigious IF design award.

As well as lighting, the Studio also specialises in furniture design, both for the contract market and the home. It has worked on a wide variety of product types ranging from seating projects which include – stacking, meeting, reception, boardroom, auditorium chairs, to other contract areas such as office desking, storage and screening .

In addition to this, the studio has gained particular expertise in Public seating for Transport – in airports, rail networks and port terminals. It's designs are specified worldwide and have been awarded major contracts in numerous International Airports in countries across Europe and Asia.

For the home - the Studio is continually generating new ideas for the objects that surround us such as sofas, lounge chairs, dining chairs and shelving.

Both Heritage Design and Ambit Studio have now combined to form Paul Heritage Studio, which is based in Wimbledon, London. Continuing to specialise in furniture and lighting, it has deliberately remained compact, so that each project that goes through maintains the continuity and attention to detail that only a small team can give.

Foster Associates - The office desking and table system was initially prototyped and tested in-house at the Foster offices. It was then developed further and specially manufactured for the Renault Building in Swindon.

This initial range, provided the majority of the surfaces used in the Renault building - from the reception table at the entrance of the factory showroom - to the glass topped dining tables in the canteen, as well as the laminate topped office desks in the factory and all the meeting tables in the conference rooms.

It was this desking and table system, that was later developed for production by Tecno Spa to become the Nomos range of office furniture.
